Media Report Analysis - Essay ExampleIn December 2009, Lovett was suspended from the football club, and in February 2010, the club terminated his geld. Why Asian American males are sexually overlooked (undersexed) in the Term Paper
Why Asiatic American males are knowledgeablely overlooked (undersexed) in the US - limit Paper ExampleRacially, black men on the average are considered to have the largest endowment, Asians the least and whites in between. Although this is probably true, the important thing from a sexual behavior point of view is the perception. Considering this, it should not be surprising that many women do not consider Asian males as likely prospects for sexual partnerships. Asian Birth Rates and its Consequences While sources indicate that Japan has a lower birth rate than China, both are very low with no signs of an imminent rebound.( East-West Center) Indeed, most of developed industrial Asia has decreasing birth rates. Even though war ravaged, Afghanistan has the highest birth rate in the region as it is the least developed. The much advanced countries such as Japan, South Korea, and China, after a period of rapid economic growth, are now slowing down. (Fogarty 2997) This means fewer phys ical exercise opportunities for the young and well educated, including women. As in the West 2 incomes are required for a decent standard of living for young married couples, specially those with fryren. Also because Asian males are not inclined to bundle the burdens of domestic duties, women find it increasingly difficult to combine a fulfilling career with marriage and child rearing. Therefore, many have decided to chose one or the other, reducing the marriage rate and by extension the birth rate. If a woman decides to be a stay at home mom she would need to find a well heeled mate, difficult to do with income levels determined by age and experience. Although Japan has a very low marriage/birth rate it is slightly higher in rural than urban areas because extended families tend to live together and share the burden of child care. As well as decreasing birth rates, there is also a trend in Asia as there is in the West toward lower birth rates of males compared to females.( redOrb it 2008) Male births still outnumber female with the rates varying between deoxycytidine monophosphate and 110 males for every 100 females. However, the gap is narrowing, possibly due to the effects of increased pollution. At first blush one would think that would give more opportunity for Asian males for constant and casual relationships. The economic impediments of marriage and child rearing have been discussed above. In the case of casual sexual relationships it is difficult to find data but I think one can make reasonable assumptions based on demographic changes. With globalization and increased educational and career resulting from feminism, they are no durable dependent on marriage and support of local males. They are more able to pursue their own careers if they wish, chose not to marry and pursue sexual blessedness with partners of other races who allegedly offer greater sexual prowess. Racial Humiliation as a Fetish The internet is flooded with sites catering to various fetishes including sexual, racial or both combined. A fetish is worship of an object/ psyche because the worshipper attributes a potency or magical power to the object/person worshipped which they dont have, or alternatively feel guilty because they have an excess of it. An example of the latter would be a powerful ripened executive voluntarily surrendering and humiliating himself to a voluptuous leather clad mistress. In recent times it could be an Asian feeling inferior because of his midget penis, submitting himself to being degraded by say a white or black mistress, in the hope if he does so well enough, the mistress will eventually reward him with nearly kind of sexual relief. It is difficult to explain the psychological need for fetish worship, but it seems to relate to an attempt to correct some kind of imbalance in ones life. One website I saw was blatantly racist with a woman portraying herself as an Indo-Aryan mistress

Research Paper - Essay ExampleWell, what happens when the economy takes a turn like it has in the past few historic period? sure research has shown that 75 percent of women will not marry someone who was unemployed. Having a job is an important factor when meeting a future teammate (Gannon) Unemployment pile cause a couple to feel overwhelmed, powerless and frightened. Even if you chip in a job, research has shown that even the profession you choose and the length of your modify can have a positive or negative impact on your relationship. It was interesting to read that certain careers like dancers, choreographers, bar tenders and roofers had some of the highest break rates. The professions with the lowest divorce rates were people with careers in religion, optometry, nuclear engineering and public transit. Professions with high stress were also a source of marital discord. well-nigh careers may put a marriage at risk when they are all-consuming. (Gannon) The economic downtur n in 2007 caused strain on 29% of marriages, according to University of Virginias Survey of Marital Generosity. The economic downturn is putting stress on couple in every income level. Many couples are seeking financial, marital and unearthly counseling to help them through these difficult times. As study conducted on 134 married couples who were seriously depressed indicating 48% showing improvements that were clinically significant, five years following the reception of sessions of weekly therapy for 26 weeks. 27% ended up being separated or divorced. The remaining percentage either exhibited no heighten or deteriorated relationships. Unemployment can lead to depression, illness, alcohol, drug abuse, anger and violence. A wife may resent the fact that she must now be the familys bread-winner when her economise loses his job. A husband may no longer feel that he has what it takes to be a man, when he cannot be the familys main provider. On the other hand, when a woman loses her job and has to stay, she may develop the feeling that she has been brought down the level of merely ensuring that domestic chores are taken care of, and as such view this as going back to the stereotypic era in which men fended for the family, and women cared for it. I personally know some people that are postponing or avoiding marriage due to financial reasons. It is interesting to see how the economic downturn has caused a decline in marriage rates and how the work-life balance has an interesting gist on our love lives. Sociologist W. Bradford Wilcox believes some couples are simply postponing a divorce until the economy rebounds. Manhattan divorce lawyer Jacalyn F. What does all this religious turmoil tell us about the Chinese Essay - 1
What does all this religious turmoil tell us approximately the Chinese regimen - Essay ExampleTo begin with, the blanket ban on proselytism by foreigners anywhere in China evinces a deep distrustfulness of foreign spiritual activities in China, which is symptomatic of a concern on the part of much of the Chinese leadership that certain foreign ideas and systems would be profoundly detrimental in China. To support such attitudes, they repeatedly talk of the humilitations which the western powers inflicted upon China in the last two centuries of the imperial era.Christian groups have been the steering of some repression, including the raiding of unregistered house churches and the arrest of their members, particularly in the run up to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. However, it is towards independent clergy and members of the Catholic Church that the establishment focuses its repression of Christian groups. Relations between the Vatican and the Peoples Republic of China have a lways been tense, and since the 1950s they have enjoyed no formal relations. It seems that the government is unagitated wary of the loyalty of Catholics to an authority outside of China the Vatican, and its head, the Pope, whom they regard as Gods re generateative on Earth. This tensions between the Catholic Church and the Chinese government became obvious when, in July 2007, Pope Benedict XVI wrote an open letter to the Chinese government urging it to respect the religious freedoms of its citizens. The Chinese government is always particularly sensitive to foreign criticism, and this instance was no exception, with Beijing replying that it was willing to continue a dialogue with the Vatican, but a government spokesman tell the Pope must not interfere in Chinas affairs in the name of religion3.While the Chinese government likes to present its country as a united and homogenous polity, it is rich in ethnic minorities, many of whom have distinctive religious practices,

Systems Programming - Essay ExampleIn order to protect digital information, organizations are keen to implement technical controls such as firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems, honeypots and Demilitarized zones. These controls are considered as logical and provide surety on the logical layer. However, often the important aspect i.e. information security management is not addressed to the optimal level. A typical information security program is led by an information security manager who establishes a steering committee for discussing security aspects focusing not only the IT department but every department deep down the enterprise. Some of the management controls that are employ by the information security manager are IT governance, Risk management, monitoring Key Process Indicators (KPI) and Key Goal Indicators (KGI). KPI demonstrates the current state of security within an organization and KGI demonstrates the level of security to be achieved. As per the current scenario, crit ical data must be protected by implementing Firewalls to secure the network from extraneous logical threats and Virtual Private Network will be implemented for securing the data transmission on the Wide Area Network. The modern operating dodging of rules introduced by Micro salving is named as Windows 7. This operating system contains advanced tools for network security from viruses, malware and spyware thus reducing the security breaches and risks. Another feature Windows 7 comprises is an enhanced escort solution for the important data. This will also provide more control via parental tool to protect family from possible risks. The Windows 7 also includes enhanced protection, guard and privacy characteristic for better internet experience. 2 What security is all about The Windows 7 incorporates a tool named as an litigate Centre that allows the users to prevent firewall updates, softwares updates such as antivirus. Furthermore, this Action Centre will automatically turn on f or all the latest available software updates. This Action Centre is located in Control Panel for easy access for the users. 2.1 Protect your data from theft, hackers and accidental loss Another new feature that is include in Windows7 is the BitLocker Drive Encryption. The role of temporary works in civil Engineering Construction Assignment
The role of temporary works in civil Engineering Construction - Assignment ExampleFor manikin when ambit up a scaffold it is advisable that your scaffold is supported by the ground but if that is not possible one back end make it to name above the ground or water using the hanging scaffold (Webster 1997). A good scaffold should also be able to have a safety mechanism in request to avoid injuries in case the scaffold fails thus in constructing a connect one can chose to increase himself to the bridge to be safe incase the scaffold is failing. Formwork In his contribution Blackledge (1977) refers to formwork as the attend to that involves the addition of base material and also the addition of cover that is in retaining w on the whole so that they can be used as slabs during the construction of a bridge. Formwork is very essential since it helps to make the concrete last for foresighted due to the fact that it makes it strong (Blackledge 1977). The strength property of formwor k guarantees the much infallible support that is needed in construction of the bridge. Formworks is used by making that needed shape using steel or aluminum so that the concrete is then poured into it so that a desired shape is produced. This is then allowed to harden. When its all dry the fabrications are removed and the formwork proceeds in place in that desired shape. Formwork is used to guarantees the strong support for the bridge during construction which al routes has to remain strong to avoid collapse (Blackledge 1977). Falsework In his book Webster (1997) talks of falsework as a term that is used to refer to the activity of supporting arches and spans in the process of constructing a bridge by using temporary support structures. This is a very essential practice in construction of bridge over since it helps support the bridges from below in order to ensure that the bridges do not collapse as the construction is still continuing and can also be used to create a strong work base for the workers during the process of constructing a bridge. This always has to remain intact to the construction until that time when the bridge can self support itself without collapsing which in the long run helps to keep the bridge in position (Webster 1997). Temporary Support of Excavation During construction of a bridge it might involve excavating various sections of the work site so as to achieve a certain level of ease during the construction of bridge (Hummell 2011). For example during construction when the building is to start like dickens stories below the ground then digging will have to be done in order to achieve this. Also good to notice is that sometime exaction is done for example when gravel is need for construction so that it is dug from a place. After excavation its a good practice to always support the excavations in order to avoid collapse of the walls during construction according to Hummell (2011). There are two types of excavation that can be used i n supporting an excavation walls this can either be flexible support or rigid excavation support. When one uses Flexible support then it would take sheet pilling, soldier pile and lagging walls. On the other hand rigid support entails slurry walls, sec piles or even tangent pile (Hummell 2011). Construction Dewatering In his deep insight on dewatering Hummell (2011) talks of this process as a way that is used to achieve a certain degree of ease at the work site by ensuring that the water that may cause difficulty during the

Research Methods - Coursework ExampleWhile on the other hand a research supposition is in like manner relevant to the formulation of the report. Thus it is referred to as the assumption made by a researcher about the possible outcome of the probe. A hypothesis of a guide must be simple, theoretically clear and specific (Kumar, 2005, p.75). Among the mentioned questions of the case, the least suitable for testing the hypothesis is the issue related to the opinion of the local population about the new facility. Hence the rootage question i.e. Q (b) is least suitable for hypothesis testing. The reason this has been cited as the least appropriate one is that the opinion of the local population is difficult to measure. tho it is also exploratory in nature. Hence a meaningful hypothesis cannot be formulated. Rather is must be guided by a clear aesthesis of purpose. An Operational hypothesis states a quantifiable relationship among the variables. Therefore the operational hypothesis for the mentioned questions is illustrated below- Operational hypothesis of Q a - Increased road calling has raised the number of road fatalities of large mammals because there is high pressure on the roads and less maintenance. Research Design for Q a - Case study approach of qualitative research excogitation can be used in this case for the purpose of evaluation. Case study approach has been chosen because it allow for provide an opportunity to have in-depth analysis of the matter within a stipulated time frame. Operational hypothesis of Q c - The establishment of the factory will break the conditions of the participating households, as they will be financially benefitted. Research Design for Q c - Non-experimental design approach of quantitative research design can be employed for this purpose. It has been chosen because non-experimental design takes into account the reliance of one aspect on the other. The aspects are establishment of factory and the financial condition of t he households. Operational hypothesis of Q d - Improved mango variety will produce more pulp as it is scientifically processed. Research Design for Q d - Experimental design approach of quantitative research design can be chosen to test it. This approach has been chosen because hypothesis is based on experimental testing. Moreover experimental design also tries to change the outcomes of the participants. Operational hypothesis of Q e - Proximity of households to the road intensifies the leave of mangoes. Research Design for Q e - In this background once again case study approach has been chosen to test the hypothesis. This will also reveal the fact that whether the closeness of road actually increases the supply of mango. (Word Count 494) Q2 Protocol for an Experimental Design A research protocol can be defined as the detailed plan of a study (Rch, 2008). Hence every research study must contain a well defined research protocol. Now the case is about a play along namely Country ja ms and Pickles who is planning to open a factory at a remote place for the production of pickles and jams. Consequently they will require competent supply of fruits on time to maintain the flow of production. Therefore a study will be undertaken which will be principally focused to retrieve whether supplying of free storage container to the farmers will increase the supply of fruits to the factory. Therefore according to the objective of the study hypothesis can be drawn as follows- H0

Correctional facilities are depicted as places characterized by visible brutality where the inmates are subjected to violence (Surette 179). The prisons are also stereotyped to have corrupt individuals who benefit from the situation of the inmates.b) The perceptions on the image of the institutions can be intercommunicate if the media focuses on the actual situation in the prisons. Design Exercise - Essay ExampleThis necessities the use of a public address system(PA). The PA system requires special design as they must be tailor made to meet the clients specifications and wants. It is therefore needful to design the PA systems using an organized procedure such as the Pahl and Beitz method. The offshoot involves the surveying of the customers needs and wants, generating some demands and wishes from the client, developing of the solution using a function analysis matrix and finally developing the product using the tuition from the demands and the function analysis. After the development of the product, it is tested for its overall suitability particular in satisfying the customers wants and needs, if the product is found unsuitable or with some limits, it is necessary to redesign and reconfigure the product to ensure that it satisfy the customer needs and promotes usability engineering and ergonomic principles. The power supply This is the system that supplies t he public address unit with galvanising power that is used to run the whole PA system. The most common types power supplied include the alternating current (AC) and the direct current (DC). Most PA system use direct current while most of the commercially available power is in form of AC supplied at 240 Volts or cx volts. Rectifier unit or DC adapter This adapter is used for the conversion of AC power to DC power. Some of the PA systems incorporate this gadget at bottom the systems while others have the same system incorporated outside as a separate unit The amplifier unitThe amplifier unit is used for amplification of the share signal. The amplifier receives low power electrical signal and amplify the signals to high power and voltage which is fed to the loud speaker systems. Western Versus Non-western art Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Western Versus Non-western art - Essay ExampleThey can be used to incline information from one generation to another. Different customs dutys have different pieces of artworks that identify their uniqueness. Traditional western nuance had certain in terms of art unequivocally as art had developed in tralatitious Africa. This paper will compare and contrast two artworks that origination from the tradition of western civilization and traditional African culture. Artworks from western civilization tradition are among the most analyzed pieces of art because of their quality, style and depiction. It is important to point out that artworks from western civilization tradition were developed realistically with faithful depictions of beings and matter. This was done in both paintings and sculptures. It is also essential to note that it was the culture that invented ways of depicting three-dimensional objects in prostrate formats. In fact, it has been noted to be the unique style in all human cultures (Neer 31). The traditional western civilization that includes Greeks and Romans were known to develop artworks that were progressive in nature. Unlike, Egyptians from African traditions whose artwork did not change considerably in many years, traditional western civilization art changed and transformed as time progressed. As Camille Paglia states in her book, Sexual Personae Egyptians created a clear and perfect piece of art that was known as Apollonian form (Paglia). It later formed the basis of western civilization art. Egyptian art especially sculptures was meant for the preservation of the body after death. Artists used their memory and followed strict rules. Greek artists studied and imitated Egyptian work but developed new pieces unlike Egyptians who followed the traditional school of art (Paglia 17). In comparison to traditional African sculptures such as fangs reliquary, sculptures from traditional western civilizat

Lesbian Essay Example for Free
Lesbian EssayIn society a persons appearance and label care us categorize and give us a general understanding of who that person is. Of course there are stereotypes that play a part in all of this. However, it is al some impossible to escape seeing as how people are identified by others is usually based on stereotypes. This weeks reading ties in with this exactly. A point was brought up that I found to be quite simple which most people (myself included) would agree with, but is not always the prototypical explanation that would come to a persons mind. The way in which we understand and view what a lesbian is, is influenced by race, class privilege, ethnicity, age, the wanting to conform, and various other factors that entreat in (Crow Gotell, 316). We are influenced by everything that surrounds us, including race, class, privilige, etc. We may not be conscious or aware of it all the time, but it is always there. It is how we understand most of the world, make decisions, and how you and society behaves/interacts with one another. As this argument was mentioned a few paragraphs later once again it got me to think that the way I, a born and raised Canadian understand and view the notion of a lesbian is probably different from a perosn born and raised in another country. Take the Philippines for example. The Phillipines (in the past times and currently) almost always portray lesbians as stereotypically masculine and butch lesbians in films, and other media. Whereas Canada, comaparatively does not have so much of that stereotype in the media. that what if we did not have lesbians that fit into the norms of lesbianism? What and who would this affect? The reading brought up another good point that I agree with on one hand, but am quite perplexed with on the other as it not simple as black and white. The lesbian uniform that are put on by the lesbians who want to, (or sometimes unknowingly) identify, conform, and express themselves are not just that uniform. B ut yet they are. By wearing that uniform they might take away other parts of their identity because they are focusing on on aspect of themselves. A lesbian is not just a lesbian, they, like women are much than just that.A persons identity is composed of thier gender, sexuality, status, ethnicity, the list goes on. And so, when reading this I thought that on top of probably having a harder time coming come out of the closet and living as a lesbian, there is an identity issue within the identity of being a lesbian, and an issue with being a woman as well. Everything is connected and affect one another in different way. This is what gives everyone lesbian a different experience and identity. Even though two lesbians label themselves as such, what they go through and see other lesbians as is totally dependent on the factors.

Vaunting aloud, but racked with deep despair How does Milton Essay Example for Free
Vaunting aloud, but racked with deep despair How does Milton EssayMiltons heaven Lost is non only an exploration of classical events detailed in the Bible, but also a development of them. A dangerous feat, considering the dominant hold that religion had on 17th century England, Miltons epic poem dares to stray away from the literally believed stories of the Bible and delves into the unexplained and unknown. This is most apparent with his focus on brilliance and its sovereign match, as these two focal points of Book One are, for the most part, unreferenced in the Bible. However, without any previous scriptural guidelines or knowledge to follow, Milton was granted bountiful reign to develop the character of deuce as he wished, and this lead to him being intaked in a number of ways. As an epic poem, Paradise Lost requires the presence of a tragic hero. According to Aristotle, a tragic hero is a character of noble stature or greatness who experiences a downfall as a result of their own mistakes or flaws. This interpretation of the dramatic role demonstrates Miltons inability to place deity in this smirch as it would be seen as heresy, and as a result, he could not feature as the focal character of the poem. Therefore Milton required the use of a fallible character to act as the title-holder, so he cast morning star in this mind. In satisfying the role of the tragic hero and protagonist in his poem, Milton resultantly had to equip Satan with the necessary tools to fulfil his function as the poems hero. This is seen in the hyperbolic descriptions of his character and attributes as Satan had unconquerable Will and endurance never to submit or yield. Like the heroes of epics before him, Satan is displayed as possessing characteristics that elevate his nature above the rest of the poems characters, and it is these traits that put him in a position to oppose God. So Milton uses Book One and Satan to establish his protagonist and primary focus of the poem, and although this choice seems insignificant in the grand scheme of the poem, it acts as the stage for the rest of Satans acts.Miltons use of Satan as the elevated hero gives his poem, and more specifically the divine conflict he portrays, more credibility. This is because Miltons heroic portrayal of Satan elevates him, in the readers eyes, to become a threatening opp binglent to God. Miltons intention to use Satan in this way is exacerbated when it is considered that Satan in fact translates to the adversary in Hebrew. As Sir Walter Raleigh argued His very situation as the fearless antagonist of Omnipotence makes him either a fool or a hero, and Milton is far indeed from permitting us to think him a fool. Raleighs argument is justified when the contextual fragments are considered, as during the 17th century, religion was an unavoidable feature of everyones lives and God was seen as an unquestionable power, which resulted in many fearing him. Therefore, if Milton were to focus hi s poem on the confrontation and usurp of Gods rule, then he needed a strong character to lead the opposition. Miltons desire to use Satan in this way is expressed through the characters own admissions, as Satan, during his numerous speeches not only compares himself to God, but questions his power altogether.Satan states his contrive to deifie this power as he and his army are in arms not worse, in foresight much advanct. This clearly contradicts two believed truths of the time that of Gods omnipotence and also his omniscience. This is because Satan believes that the army he has assembled before him, comprised of fallen angels, is sufficient to dethrone God and that now, God no longer has surprise in his favour. This suggestion is more subtle than the first but I believe it conveys a more important point. In Satans mind, the only causal agency that he was initially defeated was due to the fact that he was unaware of the capabilities of God, but now he has experienced the tyranny o f Heavn. In doing this, Milton indirectly challenges the omniscience that was thought to be held by God, as he portrays Satan as having knowledge that exceeds God. Despite this opposition, Milton is careful to ensure he makes Satan fallible, to avoid any non-conformist readings of his poem. This is achieved through another pivotal feature of a tragic hero, their hubris. This is excessive pride or ambition that ultimately leads to the downfall of the hero. This pride, which is evident throughout the text, clouds Satans previous heroic claims and demonstrates to the reader that Satan is in fact not capable of challenging God effectively. This is exemplified on the very first rascal of the poem, as Satan trusted to have equald the most High. Here Milton uses a subtle paradox to convey the flaws in Satans character, as it is a logical impossibility to equal what is most high.In doing this, the reader is given the sense that Satans pursuit of retribution is futile, and this invokes pa thos. This is because Miltons use of dramatic irony preludes to Satans downfall in the poem. It also appears that Satan is somewhat aware of this flaw as well as he is described as Vaunting aloud, but racked with deep despair. The concept that Satan is attempting to conceal his disappointment and despair is an inherently human characteristic, and this once again demands sorrow from the reader. This use of Satan as an object of pity allows Milton to introduce human characteristics to his epic poem, which is a difficulty when it is considered that his setting is beyond human realms. This is an important element for his poem to contain, as it is a necessary measure to engulf the reader. So another use of Satan by Milton is to represent and resultantly associate with human characteristics, in an attempt to emotionally engage his reader. By portraying Satan as the most human character in Book One, Milton is able to use him as a vehicle to represent contextual issues.During the 17th cen tury, the monarchy had a firm grip on politics and power, but Miltons own beliefs and loyalties lay with Cromwell and the republican movement. This political ideology is represented clearly in Satans speeches, as he frequently refers to the oppressive nature of heaven. As demonstrated previously, Satan already believed in the tyranny of Heavn and these tyrannous actions are demonstrated by Milton. That Glory never shall his wrath or might/ Extort from me is one reference to this idea, and it alludes to the role of the monarchy at the time. This is by suggesting that those with power use it to extort and corrupt. When considered in the context of the time, this can be interpreted as a unfavorable judgment of the English monarchy, which had to be conveyed subtly in order to avoid treason. So as demonstrated, the use and functions of Satan are not limited to that of the Arch-Enemy. Through his riotous descriptions, but subtle hints, Milton is able to set-up the epic battle between Go d and Satan, and in doing this in Book One he is able to effectively engage the reader in his epic poem.

Canadian Multiculturalism Reflected In Poetry
Canadian Multiculturalism Reflected In PoetryIt was in the autumn of 2007 when our t distributivelyer announced us that at our following meeting we were going to have a special guest, coming from Canada. It raised my attention the fact that our guest was a Roumanian born Canadian poet and she was going to sh ar with us her experience as a poet and, moreover, as a citizen in the multicultural Canada. This was how I first heard approximately Flavia Cosma. She entered our class accompanied by our teacher and by unrivalled of her editors, carrying a heavy pocket which proved to be crammed with books and told us that books represented her life. My first wonder was to hear her speaking in Romanian, especially after I had been told that she had been living in Canada since 1974. She took care to explain us that she would never cease thinking, writing and loving in Romanian. It appeared to me that tears were going to trickle on her hardihood. This happened each time she was mentioning so mewhatthing virtually her aborigine country or around her mother tongue, managing to transmit us her feelings. It was yet more impressive to find out the luck that do her leave her country. Little by little she imparted us her entire story, showing that she was a perfect case to fit in the multicultural Canada. As her life was thoroughly influenced by the social situation of Romania, in a period when she was afraid to make her writings public, Flavia Cosma is eager to promote around the terra firma the policy of the country that offered her the help to become such a renowned poet. She praises Canada for giving her the hope and the confidence in her, as well as for crack her the chance to prove herself and her mother country her real value. At a time when her own country was oppressing her for writing in such an original way, a foreign country helped Flavia to become famous and backed her up almost unconditi aced. Actually, the only thing that she had to do was to translate he r organise in English, which proved to be of vast difficulty at the beginning. She went on telling us that her first feelings that she had for Canada were of intense hatred, as she did not know a single grain of English. scarcely Canada was willingly to adapt her as a citizen, and gave her the opportunity to study English and adapt to the Canadian culture. She preferred to leave the compromise that she had to do in Romania for the lick that she started to do in Canada. Her work was even more praised abroad than in Romania and Flavia snarl extremely lucky to find this, after a couple of long time that she had spent in different Refugee Camps. She took pleasure in giving birth to her work and struggled to make it public. After so many years, she says that it was worth, and declares that she was not that courageous as some of her Romanian counterparts were. Many of them ended up in prison or even dead, due to their desire to act different then the others did. She leftfield Romania with the hope for freedom, and she knew that she had nothing to lose, as in her country she had absolutely no chance to publish her poems.Being out of the country, she heard of the Romanian Revolution and felt a great joy. Canada offered her the possibility of creating The Association of Democracy in Romania. Since its formation, this organization has supported eleven Romanian orphanages, a help that proved to be reciprocal, as it enabled Flavia to resume her relations with Romania. Once again, she was grateful to the Canadian society that roused in her the interest in social themes and social justice. It a ilk motivated her to start the work at some documentaries about the situation of post-communist Romania, the unity entitled Romania a Country at the Crossroads receiving The Canadian Scene Prize for Television Documentaries. We were earreach carefully to her, and could hardly believe all the hardships she had to fight with in order to achieve her dream, the sweet dream of libe rty, as she told us. She took out a couple of books from her bag and handled them with special care. She started to recite to us, and we were more absorbed by her emotions than by her lyrics. Her voice was trembling with thrills at each word, at each verse. It was clear how much the Romanian language meant to her. She had probably noticed our surprise and explained to us that she gets very nervous when she recites her poems in the language they were composed in, because she finds no other language more tuneful than Romanian itself. Her point of view was strengthened by many foreigners who listened to her reciting in Romanian. She said that they were profoundly impressed by the way the poems sound in her native language and that the fact that she continues to write in Romanian helps her to remain in touch with her mother country.Later on she invited us to read aloud some of her poems. It was surprising how beautiful they appeared in the silence of our classroom. We were told that sh e received an important Translation Prize for her 47 Poems, a book that appeared with the support of an American English professor that helped her with translations. The English variant overly sounded fine, but it did not manage to touch our souls the way the Romanian version did. Other publications of Flavia Cosma that followed this one were represented by the newfangled The Fire that Burns Us, whose pages she took out of the country with great risks, the books Wormood Wine and Fata Morgana which also represent publications that appeared abroad. She left our seminar with the promise that she would return soon, and that she would share other information about her literature and, of course, about the Canadian space. The latter theme does not miss from any of her discourses and lectures, as she is a member of a Canadian association that promotes Canadian values abroad. When asked in one interview that I found published in one of the books of my teacher, Flavia Cosma mentioned that t he Canadian state is very generous to her for her speaking in the universities about their multicultural policies. Cf. Balaj, (Interviu cu Flavia Cosma, in Rodica Albu, English in Canada. Representations of Language and Identity. 2006, 327-332).The spring of 2008 brought again the Romanian poet to the University of Iasi. This time she delivered a lecture about traditions and tolerance in the Canadian society. She talked to us about the unique experience Canada offers in what concerns the diversity in all fields of culture language, nationality, religion etcetera Flavia was happy to tell us that the Canadian society invites you to bring your contribution to their culture, and not to forget your national values, as the United States do. She also talked to us about the numerous organizations of art and literature that encourage immigrants to develop their talent and make it known over the world. She spoke to us with such emphasis as though she was a Canadian-born person herself. She w as also proud to inform us that the nationality that is placed first in Canada in terms of level of schooling is represented by Romanian children. Just as she said in the interview I mentioned above, she feels at home in the plane, between the two destinations Canada and Romania.I had a great pleasure to accompany Flavia on a short walk around the city of Iasi. At the Metropolitan Cathedral she asked for an icon with Saint Anthony. She explained to me later that even though she is orthodox, she borrowed this saint from the Canadians, as he offers her great help, especially in the art of creation. For Flavia, the art of creating poetry is given by the Holy Grace, and she is thankful to immortal for the fact that a poem is sometimes written even before seeing the paper. This happens because Flavia does not write only on paper, but she writes in her thoughts, and she feels that something misses to her if she does not write on a certain day. This proves how great significance poetry an d writing in general have for her.She left me in Copou, offering me one of her books, together with her Internet site. She advised me to visit it, to find more things about her and about Canada. I realized how much she loves this country from the simple fact that she also offered me a little red trinket with a maple leaf below and with the inscription Canada. She took such a pleasure when talking about her poetry that made me get closer to her poems and try to understand them. She said that her work is for everybody and that she dislikes being a hermetic poet. As soon as I started to read her lyrics, I also understood her double identity she writes with the freedom of a foreigner, having a very open horizon, but she does not deny the Romanian soul. There are so many constructions in her poetry that are just untranslatable and even difficult to be given an English counterpart lumin lin, vajnici dumani, zborul-nezbor and braul mldios are to be found in the poem entitled Anotimpul iubir ii- The Season of Love. Flavias poetry abounds in such constructions that pose great difficulties when being translated, for she writes with her Romanian soul. Poems like Cntec de sear, Durerea te mbat, Noapte, Cnd singuratatea, which is a specific Romanian construction, and Se-nvolbur vulturii were translated as Song of Evening, The Pain that Intoxicates You, Darkness, When Loneliness and Eagles Are Turning Circles. The poems of Flavia Cosma also abound in entire stanzas that are difficult to be translated, due to the Romanian context Ah, pasre, / Dulce te pleac, / Lin te coboar, / Mam gingas, / Mam nfram, / Peste iedul uitat in cmp/ de-ast-var. The English version does not sound that musical, even though it renders the main idea Ah, bird, / Bow sweet, / Come down calmly, / Gentle mother, / Kerchief mother, / Above the kid forget in the field / Since last summer.Another poem that seems not to have found its proper English counterpart is represented by America E tulbure mierea / Pre lins din faguri deschii dimineaa. / Frate, de ce i-e palid faa?. This poem was translated with the help of Don Wilson The honey is like mud / Oozing from open honeycombs in the morning. / Brother, why is your face pale?.Besides this sort of poems, Flavia also wrote extraordinary lyrics that had an impressive impact in English But on the roads of night I prod / The chalky-white buffaloes-for-burden / Circling hills, climbing, descending, / Seeking answers, breathing. This poem is part of the 47 Poems, the book that received the Translation Prize.I singled out Flavias case because I happened to be familiar with it, but, starting from that and from what I have been able to identify as tipycally Canadian, I can imagine a true cultural mosaic of ethnic voices writing between cultures. What I have no way knowing is to what extent these Canadian writers of various origins listen to each other and resonate with each other aesthetic preferences. As I continued to read the poems, I felt that poetry represents for Flavia the only thread that binds her to Romania. Writing poems makes her discover the unknown mysteries and convey them to the readers through her lyrics. A fewer lines above I made a mistake and I wrote potery instead of poetry. I believe that the only mistake consists of the fact that I missed one t, because this is what Flavia does just like the potters make real pieces of art out of simple sand and water, she builds up masterpieces out of simple materials, such as words, because when it comes about works there is nothing for Flavia to love more than words.
