Creation or Evolution? :: social issues

Creation or Evolution? How was the earth created? This is a question that has puzzled humans for ages. There are two main theories that explain how the earth was formed. These are the theories of evolution and creation. The creation theory is divided into various groups. The most accepted creation theory is the one of the biblical creationists. Biblical creation and evolution are very different, and both have indicators as to their authenticity. In evolution life is seen as having resulted by natural processes only. The theory suggests that in the past there were extended intervals of stability which ended with a mass extinction and the sudden appearance of a new species. This process occured without the intervention of supernatural forces or dieties. Nearly all modern scientists who are not Evangelical Christians believe in evolution. Biblical creationists are also called literal creationists, because they interpret the two Genesis accounts of creation in the Bible literally and believe that the Bible is without error. They believe that the "day" mentioned in Genesis 1 signifies a normal 24 hour day. According to this creation the universe was established in six days. Biblical creationists interpret most sedimentary rocks as products of Noah's flood. The majority believes that the earth is under 10,000 years of age. Some believe 4004 BC was the year of creation. The person who proposed the methods by which natural processes cause the evolution of the species was Charles Darwin. He used natural selection to explain how evolution worked. Darwin's old teacher said evolution would "brutalize" us as human beings and sink us "into a lower grade of degradation" than any time in recorded history. He was partially correct. The fact that many people think they evolved from monkeys has made morale in the world lower. However, to say that it has been the cause for the decline of society is ridiculous. Yes, war and crime has been higher in this century than in any other, but it is ceartainly not because of the theory of evolution. A theory can not start a war or commit a crime. People can. How can you prove creation or evolution? You can not prove them scientifically. The only one you could prove is creation, because of the Bible. If you believe that the Bible is without error, then you must believe that God created everything. Creation is much harder to support scientifically.

Symbiosis between George and Lennie in John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men :: Steinbeck Of Mice and Men Essays

A coon dog and a tick, an oak tree with moss on the north side, a termite and its internal bacteria, and a shark with tiny fish that eat the extra meat chunks in between the teeth all have one thing in common: symbiosis. Defined as the interdependence of organisms, symbiosis is the basis of the relationship between George and Lennie in â€Å"Of Mice and Men† by John Steinbeck. One type of symbiosis helps both parties while another type involves one organism being hurt by the exchange. The dog is hurt by the tick while the termites and the bacteria benefit from each other’s presence. These types of symbiosis can occur in humans and are evident in â€Å"Of Mice and Men.† Both types of symbiosis exist between George and Lennie in the novel.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The physical symbiosis of George and Lennie is beneficial to Lennie but detrimental to George. Although George used to hurt Lennie, Lennie now needs George to bail him out of trouble. Lennie also profits because he needs a person to tell him what to do. â€Å"He can’t think of nothing to do himself, but he sure can take orders† (39). Lennie is â€Å"a hell of a good worker†(22) and able to â€Å"put up a four-hundred pound bale† (22) but is likely to get himself in trouble without George’s protective influence. George likes Lennie but would be better off without him because â€Å"you (Lennie) can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get† (11).   Lennie hinders George while George helps Lennie.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The emotional symbiosis between George and Lennie helps each man. Lennie’s attachment to George is most strongly visible when Crooks suggests George is not coming back. Lennie is almost moved to hysterics and his fear does not quickly abate. George prefers to feign dislike for Lennie to Lennie’s face: â€Å"I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have you on my tail† (7). When pressed, George reveals his true feelings for Lennie. â€Å"I want you to stay with me Lennie† (13).   They stay together because â€Å"It’s a lot easier to go around with a guy you know† (35). Both men need and value their strong emotional relationship.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   George and Lennie need each other to achieve their dream of their own farm with rabbits to tend. Lennie could not take care of his rabbits or even survive without George.

ART CRITICISM PAPER -- essays research papers

ART CRITICISM PAPER â€Å"The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter† by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-LeBrun   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700’s and the early 1900’s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   â€Å"The Grafin von Scholfeld with her Daughter† is oil on canvas art piece painted in 1793. It is a painting of a woman holding her daughter on her lap, the woman being â€Å"The Grafin von Schonfeld.† The woman is dressed in clothing that is from the upper class or a royalty stature in the late 1700’s. The clothing looks rich in material and sleek like silk in the colors of wine and a rich green. She has a covering on her head that looks like an extravagant scarf that drapes over her shoulder on one side, also made of the same silky material used for her dress. The woman has pale skin, reddish brown hair, bluish eyes, and rosy cheeks. Her eyes look very real and penetrating when you examine the painting. The daughter is about the age of 5 or 6 years old. Her arms are around her mother’s neck and legs draped across her mother’s lap. The daughter is wearing a white fluid dress that looks thin in material with a red sash around her midsection. The d aughter has the same reddish brown hair and rosy cheeks. The mothers and daughters eyes are equally as big in size, while the child’s eyes seem also very real and youthful.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The mother and daughter are sitting on a bench of some sort on a ledge of a window with a portion of the window open. Outside the window there is landscape of mountains, trees, and a stormy sky. The sky is rich with a high value of grays including the whites of the clouds. The technique for creating the landscape out the window, the painter used an atmospheric perspective. The outside is slightly less focused and very fluid compared to the detail used for the mother and daughter.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The colors used in the painting are very vivid yet rich in depth. A combination of high chroma and low chroma gives the picture its dep... ...oul. Maybe Vigee-LeBrun had this idea when painting and wanted the eyes of the people she painted to show the souls and the life of the people instead focusing on features that were less valuable.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter† is very interesting to look at. It shows history and context of the lives of the 1700’s. The textures of the dresses are beautiful and very alluring to the eye. The porcelain skin of the mother and daughter give the painting innocence and purity, along with the loving nature between the mother and the daughter. This is a very good piece of artwork because it draws you to it with you knowing why. Once looking at the painting you find yourself looking into the eyes of the subject being painted and seeing another life with in the portrait. The eyes can almost be eerie as well as breathtaking at the same time. The painting produces richness and a feeling of royalty that people in the 21st century do not understand but yearn just the same. I was very impressed of the classic style of the painting and my own yearning to have the same richness and â€Å"classiness† as the lives that were portrayed in Vigee-LeBrun’s painting.

Dehumanization in All Quiet on the Western Front Essay

Winston Churchill always said, â€Å"You ask: what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, no matter how long and hard the world may be; for without victory, there is no survival. † In Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, victory is seen as the only option. The soldiers in the novel do whatever it takes like acting before thinking or ignoring any possible consequences in order to emerge victorious. Paul and his comrades are exposed constantly to violence, jumpstarting a dehumanizing process that forces them to rely on animal instinct. This necessary instinct is the only thing that keeps them alive during war, but it also changes them internally leaving them with a different mindset. To survive the war, soldiers have to sacrifice any logical instinct or emotion and fight on animal instinct. They start out level-minded, but when they reach the front all that changes, as Paul believes when he says, â€Å"We march up, moody or good tempered soldiers – we reach the zone where the front begins and become on instinct human animals† (56). This animal instinct is necessary for their survival. When they are put in a situation concerning warfare, their mind adapts to the environment and begins to think of the enemy as targets, rather than human beings. It is simply a defensive mechanic that allows them to save themselves without the feeling of guilt. Paul’s opinion is that, â€Å"We have become wild beasts. We do not fight, we defend ourselves against annihilation†¦No longer do we lie helpless, waiting on the scaffold, we can destroy and kill, to save ourselves; to save ourselves and be revenged† (113). They are so preoccupied with fighting and staying alive, that their emotions completely disappear. This is proven by Paul’s thoughts: â€Å"If your own father came over with them you would not hesitate to fling a bomb at him† (114). Ultimately, if they did not dehumanize themselves they would not be able to kill anyone over the enemy line. A good example of this is when Paul is frozen after looking into the enemy’s eyes during the first bombardment, but he quickly gets over this to move on and save himself. T. S. Matthews in his article â€Å"Bad News† states, â€Å"They have had to become soldiers, and they are nothing else. They believe in the present moment; it is not enough, but it is all they can be sure of† (2). Matthews goes on to say, â€Å"But what keeps them going in man’s machine-made hell is the bodily presence of the friends around them† (2). On the contrary, dehumanization is the key to survival. Throughout the novel, Paul loses close friends of his and each time he does he finds the strength to keep on fighting. He may not always want to, but he keeps moving forward in his dehumanized state towards the end. Dehumanization not only affects the soldier physically but internally as well, both on and off the front. Being affected internally by dehumanization means that these soldiers are stripped of their emotions, have a changed their point of view on war, or are given a different mindset. When Paul and others go to visit Kemmerich, a former classmate whose leg was recently amputated, they can tell he is on the brink of death. Instead of being concerned, Paul’s classmate Muller is insensitive and is only concerned about his boots. Muller has been so dehumanized that all he can bring himself to think about is Kemmerich’s boots, and receiving them after his death. Later in the novel, Kat points out a sniper to Paul, who is killing off soldiers. As Kat mentions, this sniper feels no remorse or guilt about it his actions. He has been so dehumanized that he has come to enjoy killing others. Dehumanization causes the soldiers to think differently when it comes to death. They see so many people dead all the time that they begin to care less and less. Paul thinks, â€Å"When a man has seen so many dead he cannot understand any longer why there should be so much anguish over a single individual† (181). Internally, the soldiers are losing many things close to them because of being on the front. These things are written by Matthews, â€Å"Love they have not known, patriotism and all the other abstract virtues and vices have vanished away in their first drum-fire† (2). Due to being on the front, the soldiers find difficulty in some of the simplest things in life and losing other things they have already been taught. About this Matthews comments, â€Å"These youngsters whom the War is swiftly making unfit for civilian life (though many of them will not have to make the change) have cast aside, of necessity, all that they have been taught† (2). This dehumanization changes the soldiers, leaving with them with the consequences and wondering if the life of an animal is really worth living. When Paul returns home on leave, he is struck with the feeling of homelessness. He can take no comfort there, and begins to realize that this is not because his home changed, but himself instead. When Paul tries on ordinary civilian clothes, he feels awkward and doesn’t recognize himself. He also finds it hard to get along with people who constantly want to know about the war, like his own father. Even though Paul is near his family and acquaintances, he still feels isolated. He is so accustomed to being on the front with his comrades that he begins to think of that as the closest thing to home. Even after the war, the soldiers would return home feeling homeless and disconnected from society. John Wilson, the author of Combat and Comradeship, says, â€Å"A contrary outcome, ‘the residual stress perspective’ (Figley, 1978) suggests that the psychosocial aftermath of war continues or even intensifies through the post war years† (136). The men on the front are only concerned with life and death. When their life is at risk, their thought process changes from when they were safe. Their thoughts never remain the same, and the changes of their thoughts affect how they live their life. This is proven when Paul says, â€Å"Our thoughts are clay, they are molded with the changes of the days; when we are resting they are good; under fire, they are dead. Fields of craters within and without† (271). Because of all the war and violence that Paul and his comrades have suffered through, they have gone through a dehumanizing process. This process does in fact save them from war, but changes them into a completely different person. Living life dehumanized, in the end, is not worth it. They feel disconnected from home, lose all emotions and some even begin to think of death as the only option. By the end of the novel, Paul simply describes the life of a dehumanized soldier as, â€Å"Shells, gas clouds, and flotillas of tanks – shattering, corroding, death. Dysentery, influenza, typhus – scalding, choking, death. Trenches, hospitals, the common grave – there are no other possibilities† (283). Taking all these things into consideration, it is perfectly understandable why a soldier would not want this kind of life.

Separation of Powers

The purpose of this paper is to plow the musical interval of Powers doctrine built into the Constitution. parole go forth c entirely over the origins of the doctrine, the factors that do it prepossessing to the bringing fathers, and the question of its substance abusefulness in modern America. The unicameral sexual relation created by the Articles of Confederation resembled the British Parliament in not separating the legislative and executive powers. The new American system could not name been unitary, because from the beginning it was clear that one of the structural difficultys that the new country faced was how to balance the authority of thirteen independent nation-states against the authority of the union that they were jointly creating. The Confederation Congress did not solve this problem because it did not grant enough authority to the central government. Powers that ar not equal cannot be balanced, and so cannot be separated the stronger will always tend to overcome the weaker. One lasting achievement of the Confederation Congress was its cooking that every new state to be admitted to the union would have to become fully self-sustaining as an independent nation-state before it could be admitted, so that all states deep down the union would deal with each other as equals. One brilliant provision of the new Constitution was the compromise that created a bicameral legislature. The Sen ate, where each state has twain votes, recognizes the original autonomy of the states, whereas the House reflects the veritable growth of the population. It was equally brilliant to provide that, whereas the authority of Congress came from the states, the authority of the prexy would come from the hoi polloi of the whole union. The checks and balances and separations of power in the American system have the overall net effect of forcing people to compromise, of preventing extremist approaches to social problems from gaining a footing in government. It is sometimes thought that having Congress and the chair be of different straggleies was think to be one of the checks and balances in government. not so the plan was to have them be of the same party. It is also thought that the deadlocks that spend under these conditions argon a problem that must be solved, for event, by having the chairman or a Premier be elected by the majority party in Congress. However, it is actually not obvious that there is any problem to be solved here at all. When the President is of the majority party in Congress, then the compromises that lead to a legislative circular being passed and signed are made between the all-embracing and conservative members of the majority party. When the President belongs to the minority party, then these compromises are made between the members of the two parties. Although it is usually thought that Democrats are much more liberal than Republicans, in fact the spectra of liberal and conservative members in each of the two parties are almost identical. Europeans often detect that America is the only democracy governed by two moderate parties. ) There thus seems to be little objective reason for tampering with the current traditional system of separation of powers. The doctrine of separation of powers was perhaps most thoroughly explained by the French Jurist Montesquieu (1989), who based his abbreviation on the British Constitution of the primeval 18th century. This essay will discuss the doctrine of separation of powers, its meaning and vastness inside the United Kingdoms un-codified constitution. It will analyse the relationship between the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary and how the United Kingdom does not strictly adhere to the doctrine.Montesquieu (1989) argued that to countermand tyranny, the three branches of semipolitical science, the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary should be separated as far as possible, and their relationship governed by checks and balances (Montesquieu, 1989), Montesquieu (1989) described the divisions of political powers between the three branches and based this sham on his perception of the British essential System, a system which he comprehend to be based on a separation of powers between King, Parliament and the law begs. Originally it was the Monarch who had all the power, however, it has now been transferred. The Legislature, or law making function, which covers actions such as the enactment of towers for society. The Executive, or law applying function, which covers actions taken to maintain or go across the law, defend the state, and conduct internal policies. Finally, the Judic iary, or law enforcing function, which is the determining of civil disputes and the severe of criminals by deciding issues of fact and applying the law. These functions of Government should be carried out by separate persons, or bodies and that each branch should carry out its own function. For example, the Legislature should not judge nor should the Executive make laws. The Legislature, Executive and the Judiciary should also all have equal legal status so each could control the excessive use of power by another branch. TheBritishConstitutionis fundamentally different totheUS total determine and its fragmented mental synthesis. TheAmerican model is a deliberately designed political body constructed with precision bythe18th century founding fathers and maintained tothepresent day by an secure codified document.By contrast, theBritish positive model has evolved and adapted overthecenturies, etymologizing from statute law, customs and monarchical power among various sources. Su ch contrasting extreme evolution has led to differing interpretations and applicationsofthetheoryoftheseparationof powers. In essence, theseparationofpowers within Britains constitutional system tends to be far less univocal and somewhat blurred in comparison tothemore rigid US systemofgovernment. Indeed, some would say thatthe primary principlesoftheseparationofpowersare not specifically adhered to withinthe British political model.Themost obvious evidenceofthis is reflected in Britains parliamentary systemofgovernment, as opposed to a presidential type in thethe States, where theassemblies and executives are formally independentofone another and separately elected. In practice this pith that intheUSA thePresident and membersofthelegislature (Congress) are elected separately and enlist completely different political branches, whereas intheUKthe most senior elected membersofParliament also formtheexecutive branchofgovernment. This more fused political structure leads to a situatio n where thePrime Minister and Cabinet (theexecutive) are also elected membersofParliament (legislature), creating a scenario that struggles withtheessenceof theseparationofpowers. TheBritish political system also hadthehistoric positionofLord prime minister possessingthegreatest theoretical power, being partoftheexecutive (Cabinet), legislature (HouseofLords) andtheheadofthejudiciary simultaneously.Such a concentrationofpower is broadly prohibited intheUSA and other western democracies due tothecharacteroftheir codified constitutions. Such constitutional developments have led tothecreationofpolitical mountain intheUKwherebytheexecutive has gradually come to dominatethe legislature, despitetheBritish political traditionof sovereignty ostensibly residing in Parliament. This scenario has led to allegationsofexcessive power withintheexecutive andofan elective dictatorship, with public policy originating in cabinet and being presented to a party-dominated Houseof Commons. In such an env ironment, a government with a significant parliamentary majority, e. g. Labour since 1997, can maintain controlofboththe executive andthelegislature, with Parliament enough a mere rubber-stampofapproval intheprocessofcreating legislation. Thejudiciary, symbolized bytheroleoftheLord chancellor who is a memberofthe judgment party, has overtheyears appeared to have been manipulated bythegoverning regime in a way thattheUS Supreme tap could never be.Such trendsofexcessive executive power have been exacerbated by prevalent Prime Ministers such as Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair. However, in recent yearstheBritish government appears to have accepted this constitutional unstableness and has taken specific measures to enhance its readingoftheseparationofpowers, addressing its rough edges and tackling someofthe festering criticismsofexecutive dominance that has been a burdenoftheUKs constitutional development. This process has been unpatterned in a numberofkey constitutional reforms, starting withthe homophile Rights comeof1998, a pieceoflegislation that has created more explicit safeguards concerningthedistributionofpolitical power withintheUK. In particular it appears to have provided sparepowerstothebranchofgovernment that is often overshadowed withintheUKs political system, namely thejudiciary. This represent has after enforcedtheneed for British law-makers to strictly adhere totheprinciplesofhuman rights when passing legislation in order to wrap uptheprospectsoflegal challenges at a later stage. After this sour was passed, oneofthemost prominent discriminatory challenges under human rights legislation occurred in December 2004, whenthe legality Lords declared thatthedetentionofeight terrorist suspects without trial run at Belmarsh Prison was in conflict withthesuspects human rights. In practice, as evident intheBelmarsh case, it means that legislation that derives from Parliament, underthe controloftheexecutive, can now be more closely scrutinised a nd challenged bythejudiciary, bolstered by an enhanced human rights framework. In this context, Parliament retains its sovereign status.. ifthecourts cannot reconcile an ActofParliament withtheEuropean Convention on Human Rights, they do not havethe power to override.. that legislation.. (but)thecourts can declarethelegislation incompatible withtheEuropean Convention on Human Rights and pass offtheAct to Parliament for revision . Thus, a clearerseparationofpowersnow appears to be in define as a resultoftheHuman Rights Act.However, whiletheAct does provide added powersofjudicial scrutiny overtheexecutive and legislative branches in their law-making role, Parliament retains ultimate sovereignty and can change thelaw as it wishes, in spiteofjudicial criticism. In termsofignoring such judicial interventions, any government would probably cause itself respectable political damage in doing so, but it hastheright to do so nevertheless. In this respect, theUKHuman Rights Act is not as robu st in preserving fragmented government and civil liberties astheUS shaftofRights is, which it has been compared to.Indeed, thecurrent British Conservative rivalry has even talkedofabolishing this legislation, and this would have implications for tacklingtheeffectivenessoftheseparationofintheUK. Britain modernised its constitutional model with further legislative and institutional reforms such astheConstitutional Reform Act (2005). A key elementofthis Act wasthecreationofa Judicial Appointments Committee that limited executive patronage in appointingthe judiciary, as well as a British Supreme Court, reflecting a more explicitseparationofjudicial. This new court has replacedtheLaw Lords asthehighest Courtof ingathering intheUK. TheLaw Lords have in many ways symbolisedtheblurringofthebranchesof government intheUK, with their dual role as interpretersofthelaw on behalfofthejudiciary, but also as law-makers due to their membershipofthe HouseofLords. This Act also significantly cutthe p owers oftheLord Chancellor, formerlythemost regnant position in British governance with a foothold in all government branches. TheLaw Lords and Lord Chancellor were increasingly viewed as nachronisms withintheUKpolitical system and subsequently deemed to be in needofsignificant reform as partoftheprocessofrefreshing Britains executingoftheseparationoftheory. a In conclusion, it is treasure that certain degree of power and functions between the three organs do overlap, which kick up that although each organ functions within its own sphere, none is supreme. The sphere of power conceded to Parliament to enact law to regulate its own procedure is a clear example of the existence of Separation of Power. Therefore, the doctrine of Separation of Power is deemed to be a rule of political wisdom.

Its competitors market share is declining each year, which is the biggest opportunity for Toyota. Toyota and its competitors have similar segmentation and targeting but in creating positioning Toyota has come off much forrard than its competitors because of its products attributes.Further, it is also ahead of its competitors in technology front. For example, it is the outgrowth automobile producer that introduced hybrid in the market. Today, the mark et share for its hybrid is evolution exponentially. At the same time, hybrid products of its competitors are not successful. Threats overly opportunities in the marketplace, Toyotas most illustrated product Prius has not got much success in Europe and its market share is declining in Japan itself.
